Bill S4048,  prohibiting a county or municipality from approving the construction of certain warehouses on a lot of land within 1,000 feet of a historic district, has been introduced.

Message from Mayor Fritts:

Coming up on our nation’s 250th anniversary, protecting the historic nature of our state from the harms of warehouse sprawl is crucial. That is why I am so thankful to Senator Vin Gopal and Asw. Carol Murphy for working with me and others in drafting S4048/A5241! These bills would prohibit warehouses on lots of land within 1,000 feet of historic districts.

While this legislation is limited in its scope of applicability, it will go a long way toward protecting historic districts from increased stormwater damage, unsafe truck traffic, environmental harms, and threats to the livelihoods of residents in historic districts across the state, like Allentown.

This bill is already planned for swift passage.  As on Thursday, the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee will be voting on this bill. I look forward to testifying at the State House in support of this bill. I will continue to work with the Sponsors, their staff, and others to see this bill become law in hopefully a short manner to bring significant protections for historic districts across the state.
