Free Black History Month program with Sue Kozel at Historic Walnford on Saturday, February 28th at 1 p.m.

Historic Walnford and Monmouth County Parks will host a free public talk in celebration of Black History Month and Monmouth 250 titled African American People in Quaker Richard Waln’s World.

Local historian Sue Kozel will explore the life of Quaker abolitionist Richard Waln, his efforts in the abolitionist movement, and the African Americans he employed and helped in Western Monmouth County. The program highlights an often-overlooked chapter of local Black history and Quaker involvement in the fight against slavery.

The program will take place on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. inside the Waln House Kitchen at Historic Walnford, Upper Freehold, NJ. Light refreshments will follow.

Space is limited to 30 participants, and registration is required. To register, please call Julie Fenlon, Monmouth County Parks Supervisor, at (609) 259-6275, or email Sue Kozel at suekozel@gmail.com with your name, address, email, and phone number. A waiting list will be created once registration is full.
