Join local historian, Sue Kozel, for an engaging and thought-provoking presentation exploring Thomas Jefferson’s complicated relationship with Quakers, his vision of liberty, equality, and individual rights, and the realities of slavery during his time.

Sue Kozel, a former residential fellow at the International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello, Virginia, will share her research into Jefferson’s relationships with Quakers and former Quakers. Jefferson employed Quakers and ex-Quakers to provide services and goods for his Virginia plantations, including individuals who had once been involved in the abolitionist movement but later left the Quaker religion, sold goods to Jefferson, or worked directly for him.

The presentation will examine Jefferson’s ideals of liberty, equality, and individual rights while considering the experiences of the people he enslaved and the Quakers who helped meet the needs of his household and plantations.
