Dear Residents and visitors to Allentown, NJ:

We are issuing an important update regarding Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly known as bird flu, which has recently impacted wildlife populations throughout New Jersey. This information is being provided in coordination with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).

Several deceased geese have been identified on the pond at our local parks. Due to current ice conditions, we are temporarily unable to safely remove the carcasses. We are closely monitoring weather conditions and will begin removal operations as soon as the ice has sufficiently melted.

To protect public health and prevent potential spread to pets and other wildlife, the following locations will be temporarily closed effective immediately and until further notice:

  • Dr. Farmers Park
  • Pete Sensi Park
  • The area behind the Old Mill along the waterway

We are working directly with NJDEP officials and following all applicable state and local health protocols.

If You See Sick or Dead Birds:
Please report any sick or deceased geese immediately to Allentown Borough Hall at 609-259-3151.

For reports involving five (5) or more birds, residents may also complete the NJDEP Wild Bird Disease Reporting Form online.

Important Safety Guidelines:

Do Not Touch:
Do not handle or attempt to move sick or dead birds.

Protect Pets:
Keep dogs and cats away from geese, their droppings, and any water bodies where deceased birds are present.

Private Property Disposal:
Although NJDEP advises against handling wildlife, if removal on private property is unavoidable, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves, mask, and eye protection), use a shovel to double-bag the carcass, and disinfect all tools with a bleach-water solution afterward.

We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Thank you for your patience, cooperation, and understanding as we work to safeguard our community.

Sincerely,
Mayor Thomas C. Fritts
